Insolvency statistics – December 2023

Here are the last stats for 2023!

All the data is taken from the monthly stats created by the insolvency service.

The graph below shows the total number of company insolvencies each month since December 2019 and is split by the type of insolvency.

We end the year on a dip in the total number of company insolvencies with over 400 less than November, however, there is still a gradual, overall upwards trend in the total number of insolvencies since the start of 2021.


There were 2,002 registered company insolvencies in December 2023 in England & Wales

  • 2% higher than December last year (1,965 in December 2022)
  • 464 less cases than last month (2,466 in November 2023) 

These figures are made up as follows: 

Creditors Voluntary Liquidations - CVLs  = 1,731 - 5% higher than December 2022

Compulsory liquidations = 153 - 18% lower than in December 2022

Administrations = 103 - 8% lower than December 2022

Company Voluntary Arrangements - CVA's  = 15 - 50% higher than December 2022

Receivership =0

Moratorium = 49 between 26th June 2020 & 31st December 2023
