Welcome to January's insolvency stats blog - the first stats blog of 2025 (published in February 2025).All the data is taken from the monthly company insolvency statistics created by the insolvency service.
In January there were a total of 1,971 registered company insolvencies in England and Wales. This is 6% higher than in December last year and 11% higher than in January 2024. Creditors Voluntary Liquidations (CVL) made up 78% of all company insolvencies and were 14% higher than in January 2024.
The graph below shows the total number of company insolvencies, split by the type of insolvency, the data is from January 2020 to January 2025.

There were 1,971 registered company insolvencies in December 2024 in England & Wales
- 6% higher than last month
- 11% higher than January 2024
These figures are made up as follows:
Creditors Voluntary Liquidations - CVLs = 1,546
Compulsory liquidations = 269
Administrations = 142
Company Voluntary Arrangements - CVA's = 14
Receivership =0
Moratorium = 50 between 26th June 2020 & 31st January 2025
